About

We’re Developers at Large; the name started as a fat joke but we’re anything but.  We’re a small team of three guys living in Australia trying to get by doing what we like: learning about and implementing technology.  From one moment to the next we’re doing several different and interesting things, from researching a rails project to developing a wifi network and finishing up with a round of WordPress implementation.

How we started

Developers at Large was born from the fact that Jon, our project coordinator, was repeatedly being asked to build websites. While he was working at the time, he knew people who would appreciate the work (and the money) and decided to get things moving with Jetha Chan and Matt Sharpe.  Between Jetha building the sites and Matt making sure they ran smoothly, we’ve slowly built our business based on realistic timeframes and insane boutique WordPress plugins.

What we do

We do a lot, the majority of our sites have been built using WordPress as we like the easy to use CMS and the customisation of its back end.  We’ve been spending a fair bit of time working on making relational data easier to use within WP and now have a pretty good handle on all the system internals.  We also spend a fair bit of time assessing other web frameworks including Code-Igniter, Rails, Mojolicious, and many more.  When we’re not familar with a system or technology we sit down and spend the time required to learn and assess to ensure we use the best possible tools for the job at hand.

Why we do it

We want to learn, and we enjoy the web and working together; doing this work allows us to do more of what we love. It also helps that the work pays for the coffee ^_^;
